Our Story
The Gathering was started in 2010 as a congregation of Forest Grove Community Church with the desire to provide a space for people who are disconnected from church and have an interest in exploring who Jesus is and what it might mean to follow Him. Until 2023 we called ourselves, The Gathering at Broadway, and we focused on being present in the Broadway neighbourhood. For well over a decade we met in rented spaces in Broadway/Nutana including Oskayak School, the Cosmo Seniors Center, and Victoria School. In the initial years the congregation was made up primary of adults, both married and single, with very few children. But in the last 4-5 years that has changed. We are now a congregation of about 120 with about 35 children and a handful of youth. The community is intergenerational but leans toward the younger side with many young parents and some single people.
After several years of unsuccessful searching for a meeting space in Broadway/Nutana that had some classroom space for kids, we had the opportunity in the spring of 2023 to move to a church building located at 102 Goerzen Street in Silverwood Heights. In August-October of 2023 we did some repairs and renovations on the classroom space of that building and are delighted to have a new home that seems to be a great fit for all ages of the congregation.
Our intention is to be an inter-generational worshipping community that people of all ages, and backgrounds can call home. We are learning how to do that together as we recognize that all of us are in process. We are not a perfect community by any means, but we aspire to be authentic about who we are so that we can grow into a genuine faith. Being real is more important than being perfect.
